AVANDIA ALERT!

Breaking News

9/12/2007 Avandia - More Studies

The FDA has issued a Safety Alert on Avandia.

While being treated with Avandia, serious medical conditions and side effects are known to occur. Possible side effects include:

Heart Attack
Congestive Heart Failure
Heart Disease
Cardiac Death
The New England Journal of Medicine recently released the results from 42 studies involving 15,560 diabetes patients who were prescribed Avandia. Patients getting Avandia were 43 percent more likely to have a heart attack. The study also suggested a trend toward higher death rates in the Avandia group.

Patients who are taking Avandia, especially those who are known to have underlying heart disease or who are at high risk of heart attack should talk to their doctor about this new information as they evaluate the available treatment options for their type 2 diabetes.

Avandia / rosiglitazone is manufactured by drug maker GlaxoSmithKline, and is one of the most popular pharmaceuticals for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. Avandia was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 to help patients with diabetes keep blood sugar levels within safe limits. Since then, approximately 60 million prescriptions have been written for the drug.

Avandia is in the same class of drugs as Rezulin, which has been associated with rare but serious liver injury, including liver failure. When taking Avandia with other oral diabetes medicines, there is a risk of blood sugar becoming dangerously low.

If you or a family member have experienced any of the listed medical conditions while being treated with Avandia, or shortly there after, please contact us for more information. Click here to sign up for a free case evaluation or give us a Call at the toll free telephone number listed above.

Avandia Investigation

According to a New York Times article published June 2, 2007, Dr. John B. Buse, a nationally noted diabetes specialist says he was the target of an effort to silence his criticism of the drug. A Congressional committee will hold a hearing on Wednesday, the subject under discussion will be the safety of the diabetes drug Avandia and whether federal drug regulators have paid close enough attention to its potential risks.

Congressional investigators have been looking into what they have called "very serious" claims that Avandia¡¯s maker "silenced one or more medical professionals who attempted to speak out about the potential for cardiovascular problems with Avandia," according to a letter to Glaxo last week from the Senate Finance Committee.

Glaxo has denied that it made any effort to stifle a scientific discussion of its drug, used for Type 2 diabetes. Avandia is the company's second-largest product with more than $3 billion in sales last year.
